The bivalve mollusc Abra alba

These animals live buried in sand or mud on the sea bed and can occur in huge numbers; in some places several thousand per square metre have been recorded!  They can feed either by filtering tiny particles from the water, or by sucking up sediment from the sea bed with a siphon and extracting food from it.
